The Killerby Vineyard is located about a mile from the Indian Ocean some 2 hours drive south of Perth. The proximity to the ocean ensures that a strong maritime influence exists. The 22 hectares (about 50 acres} of vines are divided up in to five 4.4 hectare blocks. Each block apart from Block 4 is made up of a single variety. Block 4 is half Chardonnay and half Semillon. Block 1 underwent planting in 1998 of Merlot grafted to Schwarzmann rootstock. This stock gives better fruit set at flowering and increases eventual wine color. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz (Blocks 2 & 3 respectively} were planted in the early 1970's. Their age and low yielding capacity give rise to fully developed, ripe fruit, color, flavor and tannins. The Block 4 Semillon and Chardonnay were planted in the mid 80's and also provide mature, well-ripened fruit with exceptional balance. The acid balance in all the Killerby wines comes from the unique Tuart loam soil. This loam contains dissolved calcareous deposits not unlike the chalk soils of Champagne. The vine rows are planted north/south thus ensuring even ripening on both sides of the canopy during the day. During the summer months a cooling, afternoon, westerly sea breeze ensures temperatures never reach extremes. Rainfall is winter dominant, as one would expect in this Mediterranean type climate.
Irrigation to the vines is minimal and essentially used only to keep the vine's vegetative growth healthy. All of the vines are hand pruned and the number of buds left at pruning is adjusted each year according to the previous year's growth. Shoot thinning is undertaken in the spring of each year to remove those shoots not actively involved in bearing fruit. This ensures optimal ripening conditions for those shoots bearing fruit. Additionally, any shaded fruit flavors are prevented from developing because of the more open nature of the foliage post the thinning.
