Luca

Beautiful pale-gold color with enticing aromas of lemon crème, baking spices and some tropical fruit notes. The aromas carry through to the palate, and are joined by hints of tropical fruit, spiced baked pear, and a stony/mineral flavor that creates a stylish wine that seems part New and part Old World. Finishes long with just a kiss of oak. This Chard has a lot of flavor, but manages never to lose its balance. Pairs well with most fish, lobster, crab, chicken, and even many pork preparations. Particularly recommended with dishes using sautéed wild mushrooms or butter sauces.

Wine Advocate

Luca Chardonnay is annually a candidate for Argentina's finest Chardonnay, the primary competitor being Catena Zapata. The 2006 Chardonnay was aged for 12 months in French oak, 50% new. It is light gold in color with a superb aromatic display of spicy oak, mineral, butterscotch, poached pear, and tropical fruits. Medium to full-bodied, it is smoothly textured with outstanding depth and concentration and a lengthy finish. It blows away most white Burgundies and California Chardonnays at twice the price. Luca is the personal project of Laura Catena, daughter of Nicolas Catena. Luca takes its name from Laura's oldest son.

Score: 92. —Jay Miller, December 2007.

Wine Enthusiast

Fancy French oak is a big part of the equation in this lofty, high-elevation Chardonnay from Argentina. The nose mixes equal parts resin, vanilla and apple, and for the most part so does the acid-fresh palate. This is no dead-weight wine; the acidity is zesty creating a slight angularity and sharpness. Still, for serious Chardonnay you'd be hard-pressed to find better in Argentina.

Score: 91. —Michael Schachner, November 01, 2008.

Wine Spectator

Rich but focused, with enticing yellow apple and grilled hazelnut notes followed by additional hints of toast, brioche and citrus fruits. Long, rich finish. Drink now through 2009.

Score: 90. —James Molesworth, August 31, 2008.
